About

Marika VanderWal is a graphic designer and studio artist who is as comfortable designing for a client as she is making deeply conceptual artwork in her studio. Taking a cue from the natural and celestial worlds, her brightly colored work explores whimsical themes and aesthetics, blending structure with imagination. A well-organized designer with a sharp wit and keen eye for detail, she thrives at the intersection of precision and playfulness, where design meets artistic exploration.

In the studio, she is highly detail-oriented, with a deeply seated understanding of 3D work and tactile objects. Marika’s non-representational work references the natural world, inviting the viewers to develop their own unique narratives. Her work evokes curiosity and wonder, transcending fleeting trends to create something enduring and timeless.

Currently a student at Black Hills State University, she is expected to graduate in the Spring of 2026. Marika has published her work in Monochromica Issue 001 and has participated in the 2024 9inhandpress international print exchange.

Design Philosophy

I believe that great design exists at the intersection of structure and imagination. It is both precise and playful, intentional yet open to discovery. My approach blends logic with creativity, ensuring that every element serves a purpose while leaving room for curiosity and exploration. Inspired by the natural and celestial worlds, my work embraces vibrant color, bold forms, and a sense of whimsical designs that feel both engaging and enduring. By balancing meticulous detail with expressive freedom, I create work that not only captures attention but also invites deeper interaction.
